How do I know which class to register for?
You can read descriptions for all of our classes HERE. If you are new to circus arts, look for beginner or all levels classes. Some classes have prerequisites, such as those labelled intermediate or advanced. If you are unsure of whether or not you meet the requirements, send us an email and we will be happy to help you find the right class.

I don’t have a lot of upper body strength / I’m not in great shape / I’ve never done anything like this before. Can I still take a class, or does it require a certain level of fitness?
There is something in our circus community for everyone, so if circus is your jam, come on in! We offer classes for all levels of ability from age 7 to adults. Many people that begin training with us are complete beginners. Circus Arts are a great way to workout and get in shape, particularly if you’re not in to going to the gym. We tailor classes to suit your individual goals, and we’ll build from wherever you’re at.

If you have specific health concerns or injuries, contact us before registering to discuss your options.

How hard is it?
Circus classes, whether it’s aerial or ground arts, offer a unique way to challenge yourself mentally and physically. Think of it as a hobby that takes work, focus, and a bit of dedication to progress in. However, once you see progress you’ll be hooked! By taking your first class, you are beginning a process of learning, discovery, growth, and improvement.

If you have never participated in an activity like this before, expect to earn a few bumps, bruises and sore muscles along the way. We break everything down into small steps that will get you off the ground with a little persistence. As with anything worth pursuing, it’s not easy, but it is incredibly rewarding and super fun!

Is it safe?
With any physical activity, there is some risk. Aerial Arts are thrilling partially because of the perceived risk of performing tricks at heights. However, our teachers are trained professionals whose number one job is keeping students safe. In circus, we take calculated risks, meaning that we are properly and thoroughly prepared for every move we perform. All skills are learned on the ground, and height is only gained as strength and knowledge improve. Students are highly supervised and are never permitted to work beyond their limits. Teachers make use of additional safety measures such as hands-on spotting techniques and thick crash mats. Students learn in a way that fosters a deep understanding of wraps and moves, and are taught how to take responsibility for their own safety.

What should I wear to class?
Tight fitting clothing that will not ride up when you are upside down. Leggings that cover the backs of your knees and a form-fitting t-shirt or long sleeve shirt are ideal as they will protect your skin from pinching and friction burns. Make sure that clothing is free of buttons and zippers and be sure to remove all jewelry, as they could cause injury or damage the equipment. You will also be asked to remove your socks during training (climbing silks with socks is bananas!).

How do I prepare for class?
Please arrive 10 minutes early, take shoes off at the door, place all personal items in the cubbies provided, and use the mats to warm up.
Please bring a notebook to take notes on skills and progress during class, and a water bottle to stay hydrated. There is a washroom on site, but there is no water fountain so come prepared!

Can I show up to any class that I want?
Our studio runs in 12 - 14 week sessions from September-December, January-March, and April-June (July/August are an 8 week session). Since this is more like a hobby than a fitness class, and we build on skills from one week to the next, registration for the full session is required. Please contact us if the session has already started and you would like to join, as we can often accommodate that.

Are there competitions for this?
We strive to foster creativity in a non-competitive environment where collaboration and artistry are just as important as strength and technique. Although competition opportunities are increasing, we do not organize for them or seek them out. We will help you work towards your goals if you would like to pursue this by offering choreography, act development, and performance coaching through private lessons.

Will I get to perform?
Our goal is to offer opportunities for students to perform through semi-annual student shows. Students will work on their act during class time, with the option to attend open gym sessions for additional practice time. A dress rehearsal on the evening before the show is always mandatory.

If you are interested in performing in our professional company, please send your resume, headshot, and a recent video or demo to Articus Productions at info@articusproductions.com. We review submissions on an on-going basis.
